Project Scope:
This project, Behind the Brain, by Brinsley Tyrell was constructed at Kent State University main campus in Kent, OH.
Zach Goebelt and eight other KSU art students were chosen to construct the project during a paid internship lasting two years. The first summer they created 10,000 individually cast concrete books and large slab shelves using rubber molds. The second summer they installed the
Behind the Brain library retaining walls atop massive foundations and carved the large sandstone sculptures. A twenty ton block of sandstone was carved into The Brain. They also made The Seed, a stone with organic carvings and colored concrete roots reaching out into the plaza area.
During this project Zach became drawn to sculptural qualities of stonework. "Artwork, stonework and architecture," inspired him to create a company devoted to stone craftsmanship, Complete Outdoor Installation, LLC.
